I know most of you have seen this quote before but today I’m going to explain what this unknown author’s words mean to me.
As a child, I was helpless to stop or control what happened to me. The people who harmed me didn’t care what they were doing to my future, and for a long time, I allowed their beliefs and words to ring in my ears and control my behavior.
Essentially, they threw me away. They threw me to the dogs to be devoured to meet their own perverted needs.
However, now, here in the present, I have come back leading the pack!
I’m an advocate not only for the pack of people who come to me for words of comfort and a dose of reality but of the children who are being abused today.
In my loudest voice, I am howling to the world that I have not been destroyed by what happened to me and that I am a force to be reckoned with.
I know, those are big words from a 58-year-old woman living in a wheelchair who lives on disability and food stamps to boast. But you know what? Perhaps that is why I AM such a force because I know what it is like to suffer and to force my way through this world.
Life has not been easy for me and I know for certain it will not be in the future.
But I’m howling loudly and will not be silenced until child abuse ends and people like me who live with dissociative identity disorder are heard and treated with respect and dignity.
I realize that change takes time. God knows I understand that. Changing perspectives and ingrained biases is tough. However, if I sit around and spend all my time complaining and do nothing, well, nothing will change.
It is as simple as that.
Now is the time for change and we are the people responsible for that change. We cannot afford to sit about and hope someone else will do the work to get our diagnosis definitively recognized by all providers and end the stigma surrounding us.
Now is the time for action! Not later, now!
Join me. Talk to the people across your backyard fence, the doctors you see, anyone you can to end the silence we have been suffering under for too long.
Only when people speak up can they be heard.
Like I have said before, I wish to be part of the solution, not the problem. You can too.
