If you have been watching the media, and I’m certain you have, you might be feeling overwhelmed by all the hoarding and warnings to remain in your home. Perhaps you even feel fearful, anxious, or worried because of the threat the virus is bringing to your country, state, or town.
This article will discuss how to mitigate the fear response and remain calm.
Eight Ways to Get or Remain Calm
I’ve already discussed in a previous post how fear makes our immune systems not function as well and sets us up for disease. Now I’m tackling giving advice on how to deactivate your amygdala and allow yourself to remain calm.
Below I have listed eight ways to get or remain calm so that your immune system can operate optimally.
- Breathe. Take deep breaths through your mouth and blow it out slowly. Doing this will allow your body to de-stress and have an immediate calming effect on you.
- Challenge your thinking. Are you living in doom and gloom? Are you feeling lonely? Why are you afraid?
- Change your focus. If you answered yes to any or all of the above questions, then you need to change what you are obsessing about. Open your window and allow the cool or even cold breeze to blow across your face. Go outside on your porch or patio and allow the sun to shine on your face. If it is raining, take an umbrella and go out then listen to the rain as it hits the umbrella’s surface. Do anything that will distract you from your worries and fears.
- Admit that you’re anxious or afraid. Admit it to yourself and any other adult you can to bring your fear out into the open. Allowing yourself to express that you are worried, fearful, or anxious takes the power away from it that it would have if you kept it secret. DO NOT tell your children you are feeling this way it will only frighten them and cause them stress.
- Let the anxiety, fear, and worry go. You can do this by practicing mindfulness or by exercising. Allowing the fear and worry to flow through you helps too. Use your imagination and feel the fear rushing through your body and out your feet. This imagery, believe it or not, helps enormously.
- Think your worry and fear through. While you certainly have a reason to worry, can worrying or being afraid help your situation? No.
Are there ways to protect yourself from getting sick? Yes, by following the instructions from the CDC and WHO such as washing your hands frequently and not touching your face.
Should you be cautious? Yes. Becoming cautious about where you are and who you have contact with is important to staying well.
- Listen to music. Music has a very calming effect on the human brain and will help you cope with the virus threat and the social isolation you need to maintain to remain healthy.
- Play with your children or your pets. Play brings out the best in humans and allows for laughter and fun. There is no better cure for anxiety than to wrestle with the kids or play fetch with your dog.
Nutrition, Fresh Air, and Exercise are Vital Too
While the above eight ways to remain calm are vital, so is eating well. I know, eating well means staying away from goodies, but the benefits far outweigh the pain they might bring to your taste buds.
Make sure to go outside too. The virus IS NOT in the air but is passed from human to human through droplets breathed, sneezed, or coughed out or by touching a contaminated surface. It is perfectly fine to go outdoors to get some fresh air and sun.
Getting some exercise is important as well because our bodies can fight off diseases better if it is functioning well because of exercise.
It Is Going To Be Alright
While I cannot promise you that you will not catch the virus, I can say with surety that things will eventually return to normal and it is going to be alright. Chances are if you do become ill you will feel lousy but will recover.
Even if you have an underlying medical condition or are over sixty, if you take precautions and do the things in this article, you will be okay too.
I have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) a very serious lung condition that will eventually kill me. Catching the corona-19 virus would do me in for sure. However, I’m not afraid or worried because I am taking appropriate precautions and following my own advice. Chances are good that I will never contract the corona-19 virus because I am calmly waiting it out at home.
